Celebrating Women in Animation: A Creative Takeover for Women’s History Month

Updated: Mar 30

ASIFA-South proudly joined forces with WIA Atlanta & WIA KSU Collective and WIFTA to host a powerful Women's History Month Celebration Mixer, spotlighting the incredible talent and leadership of women in animation and film. Held to a sold-out crowd of over 100 attendees, this collaborative event was a vibrant evening of connection, empowerment, and opportunity with a special panel, portfolio review, and networking.

Our ASIFA-South executive team—Casandra Brewton Johnson (Co-Executive Director), Dominique Ebron (Programming Director), and Ginger Tontaveetong (Marketing Director)—were joined by our dedicated committee, with volunteers led by Katie Clark of the WIA-KSU Collective ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for all.

The evening’s highlight panel, “Empowering Women Frame by Frame,” hosted by WIA Atlanta Collective cofounder Maria Layus, featured an inspiring lineup: Lauren Brown (Emmy-winning Illustrator & Art Director), Thy Vo (2D Illustrator & Toon Boom Ambassador), and Kathryn Leo (Senior Producer). The WIA leadership team was also in attendance including Danya Levine (SCAD Director Digital Media Center) and Ashley Davis (Head of Production, Block Party).

Adding even more impact, our ASIFA-South Portfolio Coordinator and former WIA-KSU leadership alumni, and the brains behind the first collaboration event proposal, Sydney-Gene Pawlak  led a major industry review session—pairing over 40 top industry professionals that have worked with Netflix, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Floyd County Productions, Trillith, and more with emerging talent, offering invaluable feedback and mentorship.
